Plug-ins are small programs specifically designed for use with WordPress. They add additional features and functionality that don’t come with the core WordPress software.
Manage Plug-ins
Click the Plug-ins button on the left hand side of the Dashboard. This will take you to a page that lists the installed plug-ins for your website. The list displays the name of each plug-in with a description of the plug-in to the right. Beneath the plug-in’s name are links to either Activate or Deactivate a plug-in. There is also an Edit link. DO NOT try to edit a plug-in unless you have some PHP programming skills. Read on…

Themes
Themes, located under the Appearance button, are a group of files and images that create the look of your website. WordPress comes with a “Classic” and “Default” theme that are rather bland. Your web designer should have provided you with a more interesting design that is unique to your company.
By clicking on a theme’s thumbnail or the “activate” link, you will change your website design. Keep in mind that the theme that was created by your web designer may require features or functions not included in other themes. This could result in errors or missing content. Read on…

Adding Categories
You can add new categories to your website by clicking the “Add New Category” in the Categories section of the post editing page or you can click on Categories under Posts on the left hand side of the screen. If you have a regular blog site, you can create new categories and delete old ones whenever you like. However if your website has a specially designed theme, then the new category may not appear on your website and you may have to ask your web designer to handle the new changes.
Media
The Media button works similar to the way you insert media into your posts. The big difference here is there is no button to “Insert into Post”. Therefore you would only use this method if you’re looking to upload media files for later use. Read on…

After you “login” you will be brought to what is known as the “Dashboard”. This is your backend administration section. It may seem a little overwhelming at first, but it is quite organized and easy to get to grips with compared to other software packages.

Along the top you have a link to the “frontend” of your website site at the top left. At the top right you have a drop-down button for quick links to common tasks, your username is displayed, a link to the Turbo tool (not necessary for everyone), and a log out link. For security purposes always log out when you are finished for the day. Someone who has access to your computer could easily access your protected website settings. Also, you don’t want to leave any open doors for potential hackers. Read on…

For WordPress 2.8+
How WordPress Works
WordPress is a very popular blogging program. It’s also a powerful content-management system (CMS) that can be utilized for almost any website. Out of all the CMS programs available out there, WordPress is widely supported, continuously developed, and one of the easiest to use (in my opinion).
WordPress divides it’s content by categories, posts, pages, media, and archives.
Pages – are static web pages that stand by themselves and do not get categorized or archived.
Ex: About Us, Contact Us, Testimonials, etc.
Posts – are dynamic web pages which get organized by category and are also archived by date and
are usually displayed in reversed chronological order.
Media – are images, audio, video, PDFs or other files that you upload to your website.
Categories – are a way to help organize your posts, especially if you blog about many topics.
Ex: A health blog might have the following categories: Cancer, Health Tips, Doctors, etc.
Archive – is a method of organizing older posts by date. Read on…

(Scene 432)
This past holiday season I finally made a childhood dream become a reality. I am in a Star Wars movie! Well it’s not a real Star Wars movie. Star Wars Uncut is possibly the ultimate fan film of all time. Hosted entirely on Vimeo (the other, less saturated, video-hosting website), Star Wars Uncut is the brain child of Casey Pugh. He sliced up Star Wars – A New Hope (Episode IV) into hundreds of 15 second clips and is letting anyone and everyone recreate each clip anyway they want. From Legos to live action, this is one film that truly has it all.
Having found out about this project a little late in the game, I quickly grabbed the first scene I could. Scene 432 is a very cool clip from one of my favorite scenes. What kid wouldn’t want to know what it feels like to swoop down into the trench of the Death Star and make an attack run on the evil empire? Well I still don’t know what that’s like, but I do know what it’s like to film a scene like that.
Here’s the finished product. Enjoy… Read on…

How to use Internet Explorer and Firefox
You’ve probably been using it for years, but let me formally introduce you to your web browser. According to the latest stats you’re probably using Internet Explorer (IE). Some people don’t even know what a web browser is. They know that when they click the “e” icon the internet shows up. If you’re one of THEM, the “e” icon activates the web browser called Internet Explorer. I’m going to cover some web browser basics and some helpful tips you might not be aware of.
Different Web Browsers
First, IE isn’t the only browser out there. Yup, that’s right. If you don’t really like the way your web browser works, you actually have the right to download a number of other web browsers to try. And the best part is they’re free. The most popular alternatives to IEĀ are Firefox, Opera and Google’s Chrome. MAC users are more familiar with their web browser, Safari (which you can also get for Windows). Now I’m not going to take the time to explain the differences between them here. You can find a whole bunch of comparison articles online. I’m only going to talk about IE and Firefox. The other browsers have similar functions to what I’m going to talk about. Read on…

Join the Creative Revolution
This is the first in what I hope to be a long series of personal creative projects. The idea behind this series is actually to inspire myself to get more serious about my other creative passions: digital photography, illustration, mixed-media, fantasy art, and 3D design.
I was heavy into comic book illustration back in high school, but when computer graphics came into my life, the pencils were put on the back burner. I finally got into digital photography a few years ago but I find it hard to make the time for it. I also have interests in 3D, video and other aspects of design. Work always takes the priority and personal projects have to wait. I’m sure I’m not alone. Looking online and in magazines and seeing what other designers have found the time to do is inspiring. But being inspired isn’t enough. You have to do it. When I do it, I love it. When I can’t make the time for it, I miss it. Read on…

Recently completed the website design for NASCAR driver Brad Leighton. It’s a pretty cool flash website (if I do say so myself) with an HTML website accompanying it. Working with just the photos they supplied, I created a video-like animation of the car as an intro. Then I used some of their other photos along with some sound effects to help add some life to the different sections.
